SRA Annual Report 2025-26: Taunton Integrated Catchment Study: 25 Year Flood Action Plan
A study focused on the risks of surface water flooding in and around Taunton, with those risks considered in their complex relation to drainage infrastructure, sewers and watercourses. Completed in 2026, this study was jointly funded by Somerset Rivers Authority and Wessex Water. It was led by Wessex Water and Somerset Council. Several other partners were involved, including the Environment Agency, Parrett Internal Drainage Board and Network Rail.
In 2023, Wessex Water commissioned WSP to act as consultants. WSP built a computer model of Taunton to help better understand local flooding problems, and they checked this model’s representations against historic records of flooding. Twelve flooding hotspots were identified, and the project team looked for cost- effective ways of reducing flood risks in those areas. They also considered whether other benefits could accrue, such as for wildlife, water quality, amenity and carbon.
The 12 hotspots are Bathpool, Cheddon Fitzpaine, Creech St Michael North, Creech St Michael South, Kingston St Mary, Kingston Stream to Taunton railway station, Nailsbourne, North Town Firepool, Norton Fitzwarren East, Norton Fitzwarren West, Ruishton, and Trull.
As stated on the previous page about Local flood risk management measures, the Environment Agency is already aiming to get new pumping arrangements for Bathpool, part-funded by the SRA.
Ideas for the other 11 places include creating ponds, planting trees and improving drainage.
Aside from Bathpool, further progress by SRA partners will depend upon them prioritising options, engaging with landowners, doing more surveys and designing, refining modelling, developing business cases and securing funding.
