PAST DEADLINE – Job with Somerset Rivers Authority: Community Engagement Officer wanted
Note: the deadline for applications for the Community Engagement Officer job was 22 June 2023. However, the SRA is also going to be advertising for a Community Engagement Support Officer. The text below is therefore being kept for people to read, because it might provide some useful background information for anybody thinking of applying for the Support Officer job.
Somerset Rivers Authority is looking to recruit a Community Engagement Officer.
The job’s main purpose is to help people across Somerset be better prepared for flooding.
You will work with the Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA) team, SRA partners and a wide range of people and organisations.
You will run – and take part in – a range of interesting projects about dealing with flood risks in Somerset and the associated impacts of climate change.
You will get involved with activities and events that address local needs and help to build up useful networks.
This job is being advertised because the previous SRA Community Engagement Officer moved to the Environment Agency.
The SRA is also planning to recruit a Community Engagement Support Officer. The person who was doing this job moved up to Scotland to work for the RSPB.
So a new team is being created.
You will have a hand in recruiting the Support Officer.
Together you will provide inspiration and support across Somerset, and make new links between people and groups interested in local resilience and adaptation.
About you
You’re friendly and outgoing, adaptable and self-motivated.
You like having a varied programme of things to do.
You have experience of running projects and events, including community events and activities.
You are interested in helping local communities.
You are used to working with people from varied backgrounds, with different perspectives.
You have excellent communication, listening, presentation and organisational skills.
You have some experience of managing one other person (or more).
Job background
One of the six main objectives of Somerset’s 20 Year Flood Action Plan is to “increase resilience to flooding for families, agriculture, businesses, communities, and wildlife”.
The Flood Action Plan was drawn up during the devastating floods of 2013-14.
The Plan is overseen by Somerset Rivers Authority (SRA). It’s currently being reviewed, with fresh emphasis expected to be placed on resilience and adaptation.
To find out more about relevant activities done in the past, take a look at the Workstream 5 Building Local Resilience sections of SRA Annual Reports. These can be found in the Annual Reports section of this SRA website.
